What’s All the Fuss?

David and I camped at Jumbo Rocks in Joshua Tree last weekend. It was great to slow down, get away, and be somewhere without cell service so you can’t get a call, text, or email even if you wanted to, which we didn’t.

15 MPH

We climbed the rocks.

We rode our bikes to Keys View. Hard going up, but fun coasting down at nearly 40 mph.

In the evening, we hoisted our chairs to the top of a rock to watch the sun sink. It’s an incredible show, and we joined those who whoop and holler at the spectacle.  David contributed his amazingly loud whistles to the ruckus, attracting the attention of a boy below, who was about 9. He scrambled up to see what it was all about. After surveying the scene for a moment and evidently not finding the sky noteworthy, he said in a disappointed and perplexed tone, “Nothing.” We laughed a lot about that.

About treacycolbert

I make my living by writing about health care. I've always written about life's chastening effect, but just as a way of sorting it out for myself. After years of doing this and keeping these essays quiet, I decided to put some of these impressions out there on this blog. Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think.

  1. Nothing, huh? [smile] In the eye of the beholder. Absolutely beautiful.
It wasn’t so long ago (it seems) that we would go away with friends for the weekend and we would be annoyed that we had to check in by phone with our parents on Saturday night. I never dreamed of the day that a text would instantly convey whereabouts and status. Something lost in not ever really being “on your own” to figure things out though.
Thanks for prodding my memory with that story.

  2. Wow, that’s gorgeous! So glad you were there to see it and share it with each other. Good to have a sense of humor about the little guy’s inablity to see. It doesn’t mean he won’t, some day. 😀
